TOPIC OVERVIEW

It is crucial for both students and instructors to experience excitement, worry, and uncertainty on the first day of class because it sets the tone for the rest of the semester. To get students' interest, show dedication to the subjects that will be covered during the course of the term, provide a casual open learning environment that encourages involvement, and let students know what to anticipate from you and the course. Handling administrative issues, fostering a positive learning atmosphere, and establishing course objectives and standards are three crucial first-day duties.

Talking about the first day of class, there are some things we have to take into consideration for us to achieve a good experience, and also to set good expectations for the whole course. Some of the things we have to consider are:

General strategies: for example going to the classroom to test the lights and all the stuff that is right there. Going to the classroom and testing the stuff will help us not to have an awkward moment in our first meeting. Imagine you want to use a projector, but it doesn’t work maybe you will be ashamed, for this, you have to know everything in the classroom. In addition, for a successful first day of class, it’s important to address student's concerns. Last but not least, on the first day of class, we as teachers have to set the tone for the rest of the course. We will do this by greeting our students, answering questions, finishing on time, etc.

Another thing to consider is Taking care of administrative tasks: we can go since the easiest thing like writing the name of the class, and the name of the teacher on the board; this will aware students and inform them where they are. Then we can move to more complex things like: mentioning policies of the campus policies, grading policies, and attendance policies. After that, you can tell your students what the requirements for the course are, like their level of English, their knowledge of science etc.

Creating a positive classroom environment is the following to consider. This section may look like an easy thing to achieve, but it is not that easy. For creating a positive classroom environment you can begin by greeting your students, memorizing their names, calling them by their names, introducing yourself, and letting the students introduce themselves.

Finally, setting the course expectations and standards is the last thing we have to consider, and we will do this by: Discussing the objectives of the course, telling the students pieces of advice on how to succeed in your course, asking students about their goals and expectations for the course, and giving students a short diagnostic test.
