Understanding the topic: The First Days of the Class


     The first days of class can be an experience that generates uncertainty and anxiety for the teacher and students as it is a new beginning with new challenges to explore in this learning journey. Typically, students feel anxious because they do not know how their teacher will be with them or how the classes will be in this episode of their lives. Consequently, we must establish a positive atmosphere in the classroom so that students feel welcome and comfortable, thus avoiding a lack of motivation.

     Therefore, to ensure a positive first-day experience, you should greet students, start and end class on time, encourage questions and discussions, and be available for further inquiries after class. Studies have shown that students with positive initial experiences tend to be more motivated and achieve higher grades than those with negative first-day experiences (Wilson and Wilson, 2007).

How important are the first days of school?


     Based on (Schlesselman, 2022), the initial day of the course holds significance as it offers a glimpse into the upcoming curriculum. It allows you to present yourself and your course structure, understand your students' backgrounds and aspirations and gauge their overall characteristics. Additionally, you can communicate your expectations and establish the desired atmosphere for the semester. Moreover, it allows students to gain insights into your teaching methodology, course schedule, important milestones, and your overall vision for achieving academic success. It is crucial to meticulously plan the first class session to ensure you cover all intended topics and create the impression you wish to uphold throughout the semester. 




Administrative tasks involve: 

1. Giving course information, accommodating latecomers, and addressing potential capacity issues. 

2. Clarify attendance policies, explain section procedures and prerequisites, discuss course requirements and workload estimates, and provide support for enrollment-related concerns. 

3. Offer recorded materials and catch-up assignments for students who miss the first day to ensure their success.



Creating a Positive Classroom Environment

     Establishing a positive classroom environment begins with conveying enthusiasm for the subject matter and learning students' names to demonstrate investment in their progress. Besides, encouraging student participation and facilitating group discussions foster a strong class community and deepen understanding of effective learning strategies. Also, icebreaker activities can promote student engagement but should be chosen carefully to avoid fatigue and align with course content. Sharing the class roster or encouraging contact information exchange enhances communication for missed classes and group work.



Setting Course Expectations and Standards

     It is vital for teachers to communicate course objectives and understand students' learning aspirations. Furthermore, teachers should encourage active participation, and students should outline their personal goals regarding knowledge, skills, interests, or attitudes. Teachers should provide an overview of the class structure, emphasizing interactive discussions and addressing student queries. Additionally, guidance on effective study strategies should be offered, including thought-provoking questions and recommended study time.


How positive experiences and effective introductions during the first days of the class can foster student engagement, motivation, and overall success?


     According to an experimental study by Wilson and Wilson (2007), students were randomly assigned to watch a video where their professor presented a positive or negative first-day experience. At the end of the first day, students who had a positive experience exhibited improved attitudes and positive expectations. While some differences diminished by the end of the first week, those who had a positive first-day experience maintained higher motivation throughout the course, leading to significantly higher grades by the end of the term.



Suggestions for Educators: Cultivating a Favorable Educational Atmosphere

     According to Thorn (2020), the teacher's enthusiasm greatly influences students' motivation to participate in the learning process. Besides, it impacts students' perception of the teacher. Thus, it is crucial to be authentic, as teachers should strive to present an encouraging and positive attitude. Consequently, taking care of one's well-being and engaging in activities that promote a positive mindset can further enhance the teaching experience.



     We as teachers must challenge our students so that they can express their skills in certain activities, such as developing a problematic task, encouraging them, and expressing confidence in their capacity to fulfil it. Moreover, teachers should appreciate students' contributions to any assignment activity. If they have overcome something daunting, they experience a genuine sense of achievement, boosting their confidence and motivation.
